8K IPTV: Is It Real? What You Actually Get
Some IPTV services put "8K" in their name or their adverts. Before you pay for it, it helps to know how much 8K television actually exists, what it would take to stream it, and what those plans really deliver.
The Short Answer
There are almost no 8K TV channels in the world, so an IPTV service cannot give you a channel list in 8K. "8K" in a plan's name is a label. What you can get today is HD, Full HD and 4K — and 4K is the real top quality for live IPTV.
How Much 8K Television Exists?
Japan's public broadcaster NHK launched a dedicated 8K satellite channel, BS8K, in December 2018 — the first of its kind and, for years, almost the only one. Elsewhere, broadcasters still produce most programmes in HD, with selected sports and events in 4K. Real 8K material exists mainly as demo videos and a few films on platforms such as YouTube.
Without 8K channels to begin with, no IPTV provider can carry them. A stream labelled 8K is, at best, a 4K or HD channel shown on an 8K TV, which upscales it.
What 8K Streaming Would Need
| Quality | Resolution | Internet speed |
|---|---|---|
| HD / Full HD | 1280×720 / 1920×1080 | about 15 Mbps for stable IPTV |
| 4K | 3840×2160 | 25 Mbps or more |
| 8K | 7680×4320 | roughly 50–100 Mbps, depending on the codec |
On top of the bandwidth, 8K would need:
- An 8K TV with an HDMI 2.1 input.
- A player that decodes 8K. Popular streaming sticks, including the Firestick 4K Max, output 4K at most.
- A steady connection that holds that speed for hours, not just in a speed test.
What You Actually Get from an "8K" Plan
The same HD, Full HD and 4K channels any good service offers. That is not a problem in itself — but paying extra for the label is. Judge a service on how stable its HD and 4K streams are during a live game, not on the number in its name. Our guide to choosing an IPTV provider shows how to test that.
How to Get the Best Picture Today
- Use a 4K device such as a Firestick 4K Max, an Android TV box or an Apple TV 4K — see the best device for IPTV.
- Connect by cable or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and test the speed on the device itself.
- Choose the 4K version of a channel when your connection allows it, and the HD version when it does not.
- Keep the app updated so it can decode H.265, the format most 4K streams use.

Questions People Ask
Is there an 8K IPTV service?
Services use the name, but there is no 8K channel line-up to offer. Expect HD, Full HD and 4K.
Will 8K channels arrive soon?
Not in large numbers. Broadcasters are still moving from HD to 4K, and 8K needs far more bandwidth and equipment than most homes have.
Is my 8K TV wasted on IPTV?
No. It upscales HD and 4K channels, and a good 4K stream looks excellent on it.
