iptv-org Explained: Free IPTV Playlists vs a Paid Service

iptv-org is a free, open-source project on GitHub that collects links to publicly available TV streams from around the world into ready-made M3U playlists. You can open one in a minute. Here is how, what you get, and where a free playlist stops being enough.

What iptv-org Is

The project lives at github.com/iptv-org/iptv and describes itself as a collection of publicly available IPTV channels from all over the world. A few things are worth knowing:

  • It stores no video. The playlists are text files of links; the streams themselves come from broadcasters' own servers.
  • Volunteers add the links. Anyone can submit a channel, so the list changes every day.
  • It is free and open. No account, no payment, no app of its own.
  • The TV guide is separate. Programme data comes from a sister project, iptv-org/epg, and has to be set up on its own.

Most of what you find is free-to-air television: public broadcasters, news channels, local stations, music and religious channels from many countries.

How to Open an iptv-org Playlist

Any player that accepts an M3U link works. In VLC, for example:

  1. Open VLC and go to Media > Open Network Stream (Mac: File > Open Network).
  2. Paste a playlist address from the list below and click Play.
  3. Open View > Playlist to browse the channels.
PlaylistAddress
Everythinghttps://iptv-org.github.io/iptv/index.m3u
One countryhttps://iptv-org.github.io/iptv/countries/ca.m3u (change ca to the country code)
One categoryhttps://iptv-org.github.io/iptv/categories/news.m3u
One languagehttps://iptv-org.github.io/iptv/languages/eng.m3u

The same addresses work in IPTV Smarters, TiviMate or Kodi — the steps for each app are in our M3U playlist guide. The full playlist is very large, so a country or category list loads much faster, especially on a Firestick.

Why Many Channels Don't Play

  • Links break. Broadcasters move or close their streams, and a link can stop working overnight.
  • Geo-blocking. Many public channels only play inside their own country.
  • Mixed quality. Some streams are full HD; many are standard definition. 4K is rare.
  • No guarantee. The project says plainly that it has no control over where its links lead — when a stream fails, there is nobody to fix it for you.

A Word on "Free IPTV" Elsewhere

iptv-org is open about what it is. Many other "free IPTV" sites are not: playlists that claim to carry premium sports or movie channels for nothing, or apps you are asked to install from an unknown link. Those playlists rarely last more than a few days, and an app from an unknown source can put your device at risk. Install players only from official app stores or a known downloader code.

When a Paid Service Is Worth It

If you mostly want news and public channels, iptv-org may be all you need. If you want live sports and PPV, a TV guide that just works, 4K, a movie library and someone to call when a channel stops, a paid service is the better fit — and you can test that difference with a free trial before paying anything. Questions People Ask

Is iptv-org free?

Yes. The playlists are free to use, with no account or payment.

What is "IPTV GitHub"?

It usually refers to iptv-org, the best-known IPTV project on GitHub, where the playlists are maintained in public.

Does iptv-org work on a Firestick?

Yes, through any player that accepts an M3U link, such as IPTV Smarters Pro or TiviMate. See the Firestick setup guide to install a player first.

Can I get sports channels for free this way?

Only those broadcast free-to-air in their own country. Pay-TV sports networks and PPV events are not part of public playlists — see sports on IPTV.
