What Is IPTV? A Plain Guide for Cord-Cutters

IPTV means Internet Protocol Television: live TV channels and on-demand movies delivered through your internet connection to an app, instead of through a cable box or a satellite dish. This guide explains what you need, how it reaches your screen, and how it compares with cable and streaming apps.

IPTV in One Minute

  • What it is: TV that arrives over the internet, the same way a website or a video call does.
  • What you watch: live channels from many countries, sports, plus a library of movies and series on demand.
  • Where you watch: on almost any screen — Smart TV, Firestick, Android box, phone, tablet or computer.
  • What it replaces: the cable or satellite box, the contract and the installer visit.

What You Need to Watch IPTV

  1. An internet connection. About 15 Mbps for stable HD and 25 Mbps or more for 4K, measured on the TV or stick itself. Wi-Fi on 5 GHz or a network cable works best.
  2. A device. A Smart TV app, an Amazon Firestick, an Android TV box, an Apple TV, a phone or a computer. Not sure which? See the best device for IPTV.
  3. A player app. IPTV apps such as IPTV Smarters Pro or TiviMate show the channel list, the TV guide and the movie library. Compare them in the best IPTV apps.
  4. A subscription. The provider sends login details — a username, password and server address (Xtream Codes) or a single M3U playlist link — that you enter in the app.

How IPTV Reaches Your Screen

A provider receives TV channels and turns each one into a stream of data on its servers. When you choose a channel in your app, the app asks the server for that stream and plays it a few seconds behind, keeping a small buffer to smooth out dips in your connection.

Two things follow from that. First, your internet speed and Wi-Fi matter as much as the service — most freezing starts at home, and the buffering guide shows how to tell. Second, the provider's server capacity matters during big live events, when everyone presses play at once.

What an IPTV Subscription Includes

Live TV

Channels grouped by country and category — news, sports, entertainment, kids, international. See how a channel list is organised.

Movies and series on demand

A library you can start at any time, like a streaming app but alongside live TV. Read more about movies and series in IPTV.

A TV guide (EPG)

The grid that shows what is on now and next on every channel. Some providers also offer catch-up on selected channels, so check if that matters to you.

Many people use IPTV for live TV and sports and keep one streaming app for its own series. For a sports-first view, see sports and PPV on IPTV.

What IPTV Is Not

  • Not a device. An "IPTV box" is simply a TV box running an IPTV app — any compatible device works.
  • Not satellite. No dish, no signal problems in bad weather — only your internet connection.
  • Not automatically free. Free public playlists exist, but they are a different thing — see iptv-org and free IPTV.

Questions People Ask

What does IPTV stand for?

Internet Protocol Television — TV delivered using the same technology as the rest of the internet.

How do I get IPTV?

Choose a provider, test it with a trial, pick a plan, then install an app and enter the login details. Our guide to choosing an IPTV provider covers the first step, and the installation guides cover the last.

Do I need a special box?

No. A recent Smart TV, a Firestick or your phone is enough. A dedicated box helps if your TV is old or slow.

Can I watch on more than one device?

You can install the app on several devices. With BangosPlay, one subscription plays on one device at a time, and you can switch between them whenever you like.
