IPTV on Roku: What Works and How to Set It Up

Roku is the one popular streaming device that makes IPTV awkward. Here is the honest picture: what Roku allows, the two methods that work, and when a different stick is the better answer.

Why Roku Is Different

A Firestick or Android TV box lets you install any app, including IPTV players such as IPTV Smarters Pro and TiviMate. Roku does not: you can only install channels from the Roku Channel Store, and there is no way to side-load an app on a normal Roku. IPTV players appear in the store from time to time and then disappear, so we don't recommend building your setup on one.

That leaves two reliable methods, both using your phone or computer as the player.

Method 1: Screen Mirroring from Android or Windows

Most Roku TVs and players can mirror an Android phone or a Windows PC.

On the Roku

  1. Go to Settings > System > Screen mirroring.
  2. Set the mode to Prompt or Always allow.

On an Android phone

  1. Install an IPTV app and log in — see the Android guide.
  2. Open the quick settings and tap Smart View, Cast or Screen mirroring (the name depends on the phone).
  3. Choose your Roku, accept on the TV, then start a channel and turn the phone sideways.

On a Windows PC

  1. Press Windows + K and choose your Roku.
  2. Open your IPTV player on the PC — see the Windows guide — and play full screen.

Method 2: AirPlay from iPhone or iPad

Many recent Roku models support Apple AirPlay.

  1. On the Roku, open Settings > Apple AirPlay and HomeKit and turn AirPlay on.
  2. On the iPhone or iPad, install an IPTV app and log in — see the iPhone and iPad guide.
  3. Start a channel, tap the AirPlay icon in the player (or use Screen Mirroring in Control Center) and choose the Roku.

Check your model in the Roku settings: AirPlay is only available on some Roku devices.

The Catch with Both Methods

  • The phone or computer has to stay on, nearby and on the same Wi-Fi.
  • Mirroring compresses the picture again, so quality is lower and there is a small delay.
  • A call or notification on the phone can interrupt what you are watching.

Fine for an evening, tiring for every day.

The Better Answer: Add a Stick to the Roku TV

Your Roku TV almost certainly has a spare HDMI port. Plugging in an Amazon Firestick or a Chromecast with Google TV gives you the full IPTV apps, a real TV guide and a proper remote for a small one-time cost. Switch input on the Roku remote and you have both.
